Public EV Charging Is More Reliable in 2026: The Failure Rate Fell, but Uptime Still Hides a Gap
Only 14 percent of electric-vehicle owners in the most recent national charging study visited a public station and drove away without a charge, the lowest rate in four years and down five points from 2024. Public charging is getting more reliable. But a separate report found that networks boasting 99 percent uptime still failed nearly a third of first attempts.
The Failure Rate Is Falling, and the Data Shows It
The clearest sign of progress comes from the most recent J.D. Power U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience Public Charging Study. Only 14 percent of owners reported pulling up to a public charger and leaving without a successful charge, down five percentage points from 2024 and the lowest reading in four years. Two years ago that number sat near one in five. The steady rise in successful visits is the strongest evidence yet that the public network is maturing past its rough early days.
That progress is uneven, though, and the study is blunt about where it stalls. When a charge does fail, 60 percent of the time the reason is a station that is broken or out of service, not a payment glitch or a full parking lot. Satisfaction tells a more complicated story: the score for direct-current (DC) fast chargers slipped 10 points to 654 on a 1,000-point scale, and public Level 2 charging fell to 607, with cost and payment friction dragging both down. Reliability is climbing faster than the overall experience, which means fewer dead stations but not yet an effortless one.
Why 99 Percent Uptime Can Still Strand You
Here the numbers get slippery, and it pays to know which one a network is quoting. Uptime measures whether a charger reports itself as available. Charge success measures whether a driver actually plugs in and pulls power on the first try, and the two can diverge sharply. A ChargerHelp analysis of more than 100,000 sessions across 2,400 chargers found networks advertising 98.7 to 99.9 percent uptime delivered a first-time success rate of just 71 percent. More than a third of those failures happened on chargers that looked perfectly operational. Worse, success rates decayed with age, sliding from about 85 percent at brand-new stations to below 70 percent by a station's third year.
This gap lands hardest on the powertrain with nowhere else to turn. A Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) draws every mile from the grid, so a broken fast charger on a road trip is not an inconvenience, it is the whole trip stalled until the next working stall. That is exactly why reliability matters more to a battery-electric driver than to anyone else on the road, and why the success-rate figure deserves more weight than the glossy uptime number. The other electrified vehicles feel it far less. A PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) does most of its charging on a home outlet and simply burns gas when a public station misbehaves. An Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (E-REV) plugs into the same network, yet a dead charger never strands it, because its onboard generator recharges the pack and keeps the vehicle moving to the next stop. The HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) sits the whole question out, its small self-managed battery refilling on the move and never joining the public queue at all.
The Network You Pick Now Matters More Than the State You're In
Reliability used to vary most by region. In 2026 it varies most by operator. Paren, which tracks live charger data, put the national reliability average near 93.5 percent early this year, with most states now landing in the 90 to 95 percent band, up from roughly 85 to 92 percent a year earlier. The floor is rising everywhere. But the spread between networks is wide: Tesla's Supercharger network still posts uptime around 98 to 99 percent and the strongest charge-success rates in the country, while the weakest operators have historically slid into the 70s.
For a driver, that spread is something you can act on. With most automakers having adopted the North American Charging Standard (NACS), a battery-electric car from nearly any brand can now reach the majority of Superchargers, so choosing a proven network is no longer a Tesla-only privilege. The honest read of the current data is not that public charging is solved, but that the odds are firmly improving and that the name on the sign matters as much as the count of plugs behind it.
So here is the one move worth making before your next long drive: open a charging app that shows real driver reports, such as PlugShare or your car's built-in map, and check the recent check-ins and reliability ratings for the exact stations on your route, not just whether a dot shows up. Lean toward the networks with the strongest track records, and note a backup stall within a few miles of each planned stop. Five minutes of that turns the reliability numbers in this article into a drive that actually goes to plan.
